Creating a Resilient, Self-Sufficient Community
May 15, 2017
To foster true, lasting change, you must teach individuals how to help themselves. Like the old adage that expounds the importance of “teaching a man to fish”, significant self-improvement results from a combination of available resources, education, and guidance.
By providing unemployed or struggling citizens with counseling, youth programming and alternative education, vocational training, job placement assistance, and emergency services, a community can help its members achieve self-sufficiency.
Here in Springfield, Ohio, Opportunities for Individual Change (OIC) of Clark County - a private, non-profit founded in 1971 - has taught more than 45,000 community members how to help themselves. The OIC provides a wealth of helpful resources for employers, employees, students, and more. With guidance focused on finding a job, acquiring new skills, and graduating on time - among many other activities - the OIC’s services help to foster a resilient community.
