August 6, 2024
The power of tourism in Springfield and Clark County is not just about numbers, it's about the community's collective effort in transforming the area into a prime destination for visitors and a fertile ground for business growth. According to a recent economic impact study conducted by Tourism Economics in partnership with TourismOhio, the direct visitor spending of $341.6 million in 2023, generated a total economic impact of $561.8 million. This surge in tourism, a testament to the community's resilience, has not only bolstered the local economy but also created a positive ripple effect that incentivizes more businesses to open and operate in the Greater Springfield area.
A Thriving Tourist Destination
The rebound of the travel and tourism sector post-pandemic has significantly enhanced Clark County's economic landscape. Since the last Tourism Economics study in 2021, the economic impact of tourism has grown by $100 million, reflecting a 22% increase in 2022 and an additional 4.2% increase in 2023. This growth underscores the success of Visit Greater Springfield's destination marketing strategy, which has attracted a steady influx of visitors seeking a regional getaway.
"The Tourism Economics study confirms our confidence in our destination marketing strategy and is a testament to the fantastic work being done by our local attractions, event managers, dining establishments, and lodging partners," said Chris Schutte, Vice President of Destination Marketing for the Greater Springfield Partnership. "Our significant rebound in the post-COVID landscape validates our investment in a comprehensive brand strategy for our community that continues to attract visitors in the market for a regional 'getaway.'"
Job Creation and Economic Growth
Tourism is a cornerstone of Clark County's economy, providing 4,639 local jobs and sustaining 7.5% of private employment. The labor income associated with these jobs amounts to $130.6 million, showcasing the sector's role in job creation and economic stability.
The economic benefits of tourism extend beyond direct spending. 2023 tourism's fiscal impact generated significant tax revenues, contributing $70.5 million to state and local coffers, including $15.6 million in local tax revenues, translating to $641 in tax burden relief per household. These funds are essential for maintaining and improving public services and infrastructure, enhancing the quality of life for residents.
Expanding Business Confidence
The increase in tourism spending directly correlates with heightened economic impact, fostering an environment of business confidence. As consumer spending rises, businesses feel more secure in their growth and expansion plans, knowing a thriving market is eager to support their ventures. This dynamic is pivotal for EXPAND Greater Springfield, an initiative dedicated to positioning Springfield and Clark County as a hub for worker and business success.
Additionally, Visit Greater Springfield plays a critical role in driving tourism by marketing the area to leisure travelers, business travelers, groups, and conventions. The bureau's efforts have been recognized with over 120 national and statewide marketing awards since 2009, highlighting the effectiveness of its strategies in attracting visitors and promoting local economic development.
