Jefferson Street Oasis: Springfield garden offers food, community

In a city like Springfield where fast-food restaurants are abundant and grocery stores are not walkable, resources such as the Jefferson Street Oasis help provide the community with accessible and affordable produce.

The community garden, nuzzled in a neighborhood not far from downtown Springfield at 1100 W. Jefferson St., has 2.5 acres of garden plots available to the community, providing access to fresh, healthy and chemical-free fruits and vegetables.

Driven by the modern food movement, the garden was founded in 2010 by Terry Fredrich, Mary Crabtree and Sherry Chen and has continued to grow.
