This Manufacturing Month we recognize the U.S. and international manufacturing companies making products in Clark County, Ohio. With over 154 manufacturers, 5,276 people are employed in our manufacturing sector. “If you’re a site selector or working for a manufacturing company, Springfield, Ohio is the community you need to visit,” said Horton Hobbs IV, Vice President, Economic Development for the Greater Springfield Partnership. “From food products to auto parts and custom metalworks, Springfield has attracted some of the world’s top manufacturing companies. They are drawn to our shovel-ready sites, customer service, and the ability to reach the majority of the U.S. and Canadian populations in a day’s drive. Companies stay because our workforce pipeline and training programs support their growth.”

And grow they have. For example, Topre America Corp., a U.S. automotive steel parts supplier, has expanded its facility twice. In late 2016, they invested $10 million into a 30-acre industrial site and in 2017 they expanded into a new 174,000-square-foot stamping and assembly plant. In 2022, Topre America made the decision to expand into 315,000 square feet of space where they will employ 289 employees, bringing their total investment to $130 million. “At the end of the day, geographically Springfield is located ideally between Honda Indiana, Honda Ohio, and Toyota in Kentucky,” Pepper said. “We supply all those plants. The Springfield community is the perfect strategic location for us to locate and expand our operations.”

International companies are growing here as well. Toronto-based Surati Sweet Mart, Ltd., a snack food company that specializes in Indian treats, is building their first U.S. manufacturing facility in Clark County.

Local manufacturing company Esterline and Sons announced an expansion in 2022 as well. With a 60-year history of manufacturing precision parts in Springfield, the company is a local staple that has grown with the community.

“Clark County’s workforce can support manufacturing companies of all sizes because we are proactive in providing support,” said Hobbs. “Our plan for workforce development didn’t start in 2021. It started over a decade ago and these efforts are paying off for the companies who call Clark County home.”

In addition to a strong workforce, Springfield offers businesses access to major markets at an affordable price, something that has made the community a destination for foreign direct investment (FDI) and capital investment. Shovel-ready sites, industrial parks, and financial incentives work together to make Springfield a financially viable option as well.

“We have a legacy of greatness as a city and we are putting that legacy to work in our continued efforts to support industry expansion in Springfield,” said Mike McDorman, President & CEO of the Greater Springfield Partnership.
